SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE EXTENDS SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE TO JAN. 5

Due to the extended weather related school closings throughout the region, Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau has extended its new student merit scholarship guarantee deadline to Friday, Jan. 5.

All high school seniors interested in receiving the University's guaranteed scholarships must complete and mail both the scholarship and admissions applications along with an official copy of their high school transcripts and ACT/ SAT exam scores to the Cape Girardeau campus. The university will honor all applications with a Jan. 5, 2001 postmark.

"We hope the extended deadline will take some of the pressure off the students and high school counselors before the holidays," said Jay Goff, Southeast's director of Admissions.

Southeast's guarantee scholarship deadline primarily affects Southeast's Governor and Regent scholarships. Most other University and endowed scholarships can be applied for until March 15.

The Governor scholarship is the University's most prestigious undergraduate award. The scholarship covers a student's tuition, books, room and board. The Regents Scholarship is a full tuition scholarship.

All merit scholarships are awarded based on a student's high school academic record, college entrance exam scores and their extracurricular leadership work.

"These are wonderful scholarships. They allow the university to recognize and reward students for their hard work in high school and in their communities," Goff said.

Students needing additional assistance are advised to contact the Southeast Office of Admissions at (573) 651-2590. In addition, all admissions and scholarship information or applications are accessible on the University's internet homepage at www.semo.edu.

SOUTHEAST MBA PROGRAM RECEIVES INITIAL AACSB ACCREDITATION

The Donald L. Harrison College of Business at Southeast Missouri State University has achieved initial accreditation of its Master's Degree Program in Business Administration (MBA) by recent action of the Board of Directors of AACSB - The International Association for Management Education (AACSB).

In addition, the Harrison College of Business achieved reaffirmation of accreditation by AACSB of its bachelor's degree program in business administration. Both programs received 10-year accreditation. The official announcement was made earlier this month.

As of December 2000, there are 398 accredited institutions - 385 in North America -- including 376 in the United States, seven in Canada and two in Mexico - seven in Europe, three in Asia, one in Central America and two in South America.

To achieve accreditation, the business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to curriculum, faculty resources, admissions, degree requirement, library and computer facilities, financial resources and intellectual climate that all are mission-linked.

During the accreditation process, Southeast Missouri State University was visited and evaluated by business school deans with detailed knowledge of management education, applying accreditation standards that are widely accepted in the educational community.

Members of the peer review team commended Southeast on its well-resourced learning environment in Robert A. Dempster Hall, where all classrooms and teaching spaces are fully business mediated with modern technology and excellent computing resources. Reviewers also commended the MBA program on its student composition, which represents a diverse set of backgrounds from all over the world. Reviewers were complimentary of the College's distance learning initiatives as well as its extensive outreach programs to the community and region provided by the Small Business Development Center, Management Assistance Center, Center for Economic and Business Research and the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies.

The Donald L. Harrison College of Business achieved initial accreditation of its undergraduate degree program in business administration by AACSB in April 1996. Southeast's MBA program was launched in fall 1996 and sought accreditation for the first time this year.

"Receiving reaffirmation of undergraduate business accreditation and initial AACSB accreditation of the Harrison MBA program at Southeast provides tangible evidence of the high quality of the business faculty at Southeast and the business programs they have designed," said Dr. Gerald McDougall, dean of the Donald L. Harrison College of Business. "All of us affiliated with the Harrison College of Business, including our business partners, believe this external recognition of quality strengthens the foundation we are building to prepare business students for professional and personal success in a global, diverse and more competitive business environment. Undoubtedly, a fully accredited business program enhances the region's ability to attract new business and increase investments in existing businesses. Being fully accredited by AACSB confirms the Harrison College of Business is meeting its mission -- providing business studies today for tomorrow's business successes."

AACSB is a not-for-profit organization consisting of more than 800 educational organizations and corporations. Its mission is excellence in management education in colleges and universities. Headquartered in St. Louis, AACSB is the premier accrediting agency and service organization for business schools.

HONORS WIND ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE TO FEATURE STUDENT MUSICIANS FROM AREA SCHOOLS PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF NORWEGIAN COMPOSER

The 2001 Southeast Missouri Honors Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in Academic Auditorium on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

This select honor band is comprised of 50 high school students chosen by audition from among several hundred young people representing 60 Missouri school districts.

The program will open with a stirring new work by American composer Frank Ticheli entitled "Sundance," followed by a suite of English seaside folk songs and a moving tune composed by Missouri's own Frank Erickson. The highlight of the concert will be the appearance of guest composer/conductor, Geir Knutson, conducting his own music. Knutson, who is no stranger to Cape Girardeau audiences, has earned a reputation worldwide as "Norway's John Philip Sousa." This reputation is certainly justified by Knutson's extremely popular marches that are now being published and played throughout the world. In fact, one of his most popular marches is entitled "Cape Girardeau," in honor of Knutson's favorite city in the United States.

Southeast Professor of Music and Coordinator of Winds & Percussion Dr. Robert Gifford also will conduct the Honors Wind Ensemble. Southeast music faculty will present clinics on each instrument to the students. The concert is free to the public.
