DEDICATION OF FOUNTAIN SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 6

Southeast Missouri State University will dedicate the Kala M. Stroup FOUNTAIN ON THE PLAZA Oct. 6.

Southeast's Golden Eagles Marching Band will perform as a prelude to the dedication ceremony, which begins at 4:30 p.m. in front of Kent Library. Speakers for the 30-minute ceremony are Dr. Kenneth Dobbins, Southeast president; Donald Dickerson, president of the Board of Regents; Tanya Efken, Student Government president; Ronald Clayton, professor of art; Paul Klaus, landscape architect; and Dr. Kala M. Stroup, commissioner of higher education.

As a conclusion to the ceremony, Dobbins, Dickerson and Stroup are expected to unveil an inscribed plaque which will be placed with the fountain.

Stroup, for whom the fountain in front of Kent Library is named, initiated the fountain project through a substantial gift she and her husband, Joe, made.

Clayton, Klaus and Tom Hadler, project manager for facilities management, were the design team responsible for the overall look of the fountain. Clayton, the conceptual designer, is responsible for the overall arrangement of the fountain. He emphasized the use of only limestone and other rocks, plants and trees that are native to this area. Hadler worked out the details, such as plumbing, that made Clayton's idea work. Klaus advised in the placement of rocks, which were individually hand picked. Klaus and a team of his students also designed the landscape to complement the fountain.
