MISSOURI AMBASSADORS OF MUSIC TOUR EUROPE

The Missouri Ambassadors of Music will represent Missouri in a 16-day tour of seven European countries from June 15-30. The Missouri Ambassadors, a highly select concert band, choir, string orchestra and jazz band, also toured Europe in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. Students were selected on the basis of recommendations from their high school music teachers.

This year’s group will include 255 performers as well as 35 state band and choir directors who will serve as instructors and chaperons. The tour itinerary will include concerts and sightseeing in London, Paris, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italy. The bands, orchestra and choir will spend three days rehearsing on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University and will present a farewell concert on June 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Academic Auditorium on the Southeast campus. There is no admission charge for the concert.

Serving as tour music director and conductor of the concert band is Southeast Professor of Music Dr. Robert Gifford. Ron Atteberry, director of choral activities at Lebanon High School, will conduct the choir; Edwin Simon, director of orchestras at Parkway South High School, will conduct the orchestra; and Robert Altman, director of bands at Hazelwood Central High School, will lead the Jazz Band.

HUX NAMED DIRECTOR OF CRISP BOOTHEEL EDUCATION CENTER

Lewis “Rick” Hux of Dexter, Mo., and superintendent of Van Buren R-1 Schools, has been named director of the Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center in Malden, Mo. Hux, who has 31 years of public school service and is retiring as superintendent June 30, will begin his new duties in Malden on July 1. “Dr. Hux comes to this position with a rich background in education,” said Dr. Pat Lipetzky, dean of the School of Extended Learning at Southeast Missouri State University. “His years of experience as a superintendent in Southeast Missouri and as an adjunct faculty member provide great depth and breadth of experience that will be of benefit to the Crisp Bootheel Education Center.” Hux has served as superintendent of schools in Van Buren, Mo., since 1990. He also continues to teach courses for Southwest Baptist University at its Dexter Extension. He replaces Dr. Robert Ritschel,

who resigned as director of the Crisp BEC to accept a position as dean of the campus at Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Colo. “I am looking forward to the new position with a lot of anticipation,” Hux said. “It will be a new challenge for me. I’m looking forward to working the people at Three Rivers, Malden and Southeast.” Prior to him serving as superintendent at Van Buren, Hux was principal of Van Buren Junior and Senior High School. He served as principal of Dexter High School from 1979 to 1990, principal of T.S. Hill Middle School from 1978 to 1979 and as assistant principal at Dexter High School from 1976 to 1978. Hux served as the off-campus site administrator for Sterling (Kan.) College from 1990 to 1992, and he has experience teaching at both the secondary and post-secondary levels. He has taught physics, science and math, and served as chairperson of the Math and Science Department in the Dexter Public Schools in the mid-1970s.

He taught several physics courses at then Southeast Misouri State College from 1969 to 1972. He taught numerous business and math courses from 1986 to 1992 at Sterling College.

Hux holds a B.S.E. in mathematics from then Southeast Missouri State College and an M.A.T. in physics and an Ed.S. in educational administration, both from Southeast Missouri State University. He currently is completing a doctoral degree in school administration at St. Louis University.

Hux serves as member of the board of the Southeast Missouri Superintendent’s Association and is a member of MASA, the Ozarks Foothills Superintendents and the Black River League Superintendents’ Association. He has served as a Southeast Missouri representative to the MASSP State Board and is past president and past vice president of the Board of Directors for the Southeast Missouri Principals’ Association. He has held officer positions with the Stoddard County Principals’ Association, Southeast Missouri Phi Delta Kappa Chapter and the Southeast Missouri Activities Association. He also is president of the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Superintendent’s Association.

Hux has been involved in a number of civic capacities. He is president of the Van Buren Park Board and has been active in the Van Buren Rotary Club and the Van Buren Area Chamber of Commerce.

GRAD STUDENTS CREATE SUMMER PROGRAM TO HELP CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

Graduate students in Southeast’s Department of Communication Disorders are participating in a unique learning experience this summer. Students enrolled in CD 642: “Fluency Disorders,” have designed an intensive summer fluency program for children who stutter. The program follows an integrated approach in treating children who stutter, incorporating both fluency shaping and stuttering modification principles of intervention. Students enrolled in the course will staff the summer program.

The program is intended for children in preschool through sixth grade. The program is scheduled for July 25-28 and Aug. 1-4. The preschool program will involve both parents and children in individual and group activities. The school-age program will involve only children in individual and group activities.

The program theme is “Traveling Through Time” and will incorporate the age of dinosaurs, the Wild West and the space age. Activities will address attitudes and feelings of children who stutter, and will incorporate techniques that will aid in more fluent speech.

Martha Cook, an instructor in the Department of Communication Disorders and program director, says this program is the first of its kind at Southeast. “This is a unique program in two aspects. It addresses the institutional purposes of Southeast in that it promotes student learning by stimulating and supporting research endeavors consistent with the mission of the University,” Cook said.

“Secondly, it contributes to developing leadership in the region by providing services that offer the expertise of the faculty and encourages participation of the students in addressing the diverse needs of the region,” she said. “We know of no other program of this type in our region.”

Cook said that approximately one million Americans, many of them children, stutter. The intensive summer fluency program at Southeast will accept referrals of children through speech-language pathologists in private practice, public schools and other agencies, as well as from parents of children who stutter.

The University Speech and Hearing clinic provides individual therapy to children and adults who stutter during the regular clinic sessions each semester. However, this group program for children will be offered only during the summer. For more information, contact the University Speech and Hearing Clinic at (573)-651-2155.
