Phi Kappa Phi honor society will hold its spring induction ceremony April 9 on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The induction ceremony, which will be held at 3 p.m. in Academic Auditorium, will welcome 114 students. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Wendell McKenzie, national president elect of Phi Kappa Phi. McKenzie is an Alumni Distinguished professor of genetics at North Carolina State University.

Three faculty members and two alumnae also will be inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. Faculty to be inducted are Dr. Larry Clark, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, Dr. Paula King, associate professor in the Department of Human Environmental Studies, and Dr. Robert Burns, professor in the Department of English. Jane Stacy, director of alumni development, will be inducted as an honorary member. Members of the local Phi Kappa Phi Awards Committee will present the chapter's Promotion of Excellence Award to John Blue. Blue has organized the Cape Rotary Club's annual Academic Excellence Banquet since its inception in 1960. At the banquet the top 10 percent of graduating seniors from Cape Central and Notre Dame high schools in Cape Girardeau are honored.

Blue was the managing editor of the Southeast Missourian. He taught news writing courses at Southeast in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the mid-1980s, he worked in the International Business Institute on campus.

The Promotion of Excellence Award is presented to a person or organization of the community who works to support academic achievement. Blue is the first recipient of this award from Chapter 260 and will receive a commemorative plaque to acknowledge his contributions.

"Mr. Blue is an excellent recipient of the Promotion of Excellence Award because throughout his 40-plus years at the Rotary Club, he has promoted academic excellence among hundreds, if not thousands, of local high school students," said Dr. Nancy Blattner, past president of Phi Kappa Phi at Southeast. "In 1976, I was one of those Notre Dame High School students honored at the annual Academic Excellence Banquet, and I have not forgotten that recognition." Phi Kappa Phi is an international honor society for academic distinction that brings together individuals from a variety of disciplines. The charter is only extended to colleges and universities meeting that society's rigorous standards. The society is open to men and women in all academic fields who have demonstrated excellence of scholarship and integrity of character.

DR. THEDA PERDUE TO SPEAK AT BECKWITH LECTURE

Dr. Theda Perdue will present "Writing the History of Cherokee Women" April 9 at the 2000 Beckwith Scholar's Lecture on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

Perdue is a historian at the University of North Carolina and the author of "Cherokee Women." One book review said that she "is able to recreate the values and behavior of Cherokee women through court records, myths, and observers' accounts. By examining women's roles in farming and community life, Perdue argues that women were co-equal contributors to Cherokee culture."

The Beckwith lecture will be presented at 2 p.m. in the University Center Indian Room. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Funding for Results, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, the Department of English, Women's Studies Program and Journey.
