UNIVERSITY RELATIONS WINS SEVEN CASE AWARDS
The Office of University Relations at Southeast Missouri State University received seven awards at the District Six Conference of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) held in St. Louis earlier this month.
"CASE awards are extremely competitive," said Jim Biundo, assistant to the president for University Relations. "Entering into that arena gives us an opportunity to benchmark our work. We know there is a great pool of talent today among marketing and public relations professionals in institutional relations departments on college campuses across the country. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful creative team in our Office of University Relations here at Southeast. It is rewarding to know we can compete with the best."
The University's Public Services and Publications Office won a gold award in the category of newsletter/tabloid for a publication titled On Campus. This publication highlights popular undergraduate programs offered by the University and provides prospective students with information that will make their enrollment process easier.
The Public Services and Publications Office won both a silver and a bronze award in the "Cover - Four Colors or More" category. A 125th anniversary booklet won the silver award, and a study abroad brochure won the bronze. The 125th anniversary booklet was published to raise awareness of the University's 125th anniversary and to bring to mind some of the institution's major accomplishments and signature items. The study abroad brochure promoted various study abroad opportunities available to Southeast students, prospective students and their parents. The study abroad brochure also won a silver award in the "special publication/project" category.
The Public Services and Publications Office also won a bronze award in the "brochure or booklet, four colors or more" category for publication of an international brochure. The goal of this publication was to bring the message of international recruiting efforts to the international market. This brochure depicted Southeast in a global fashion and gave prospective international students a flavor of America.
In addition, the office received a bronze award for minority advertisements submitted in the competition. The advertisements showcased the services and programs Southeast provides, specifically for minorities. The advertisements were targeted at college-bound, minority students in the St. Louis metro region.
Finally, the Office of University Relations won a silver award in the "event" category for "The Lyceum" held on campus last spring. In celebration of the University's 125th anniversary and patterned after the original lyceums held on campus until the early 1900s, "The Lyceum" was an evening of dinner, music and entertainment and served as a distinct reminder of the University's 125 years and the impact the University has had on the region.

The Office of University Relations is under the direction of Biundo. Assisting with coordination of "The Lyceum" was Diane Sides, assistant director of University Relations.
CENSUS JOB APPLICATIONS, TESTING AVAILABLE AT SOUTHEAST
Census 2000 job applications will be available and testing will be conducted for qualified applicants Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 and 14 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Part-time and full-time temporary jobs, which pay $10 an hour and 31 cents a mile, are available. All University staff, families and friends are invited to participate.
The census 2000 project is seeking a complete count of population to accumulate vital statistical data.
Interested applicants are asked to bring two forms of identification, which must include a picture I.D., such as a driver's license, and social security card, or birth certificate. Veterans seeking preference should bring a copy of the DD214.
Opportunities to qualify are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 and 7 p.m. each of the three days. Applications and testing will be available Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 in the University Center University Room and on Feb. 14 in the University Center Missouriana Room.
KRCU TO HOLD SECOND ANNUAL VALENTINE DINNER-DANCE
KRCU will host its second annual Valentine Dinner and Dance Feb. 12 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Cape Girardeau. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. and dancing will follow at 8 p.m. with the Swing and Big Band Sounds of Southeast Jazz.
KRCU began this annual tradition last year with a gathering of over 225 people. This year's event is expected to draw an even larger crowd, with a buffet dinner menu that will feature a choice of two entrees, salad, potatoes, vegetables, rolls and a special valentine desert. The hot swing sounds of Southeast Jazz, under the direction of Barry Bernhardt, will fill the hall with big band music from 8 until 11 p.m.
"Everything is taken care of for you," said General Manager Greg Petrowich. "We set the table, provide the music and clean up afterward. All that's required of our guests is that they have a good time with their friends."

MCDOWELL PUBLISHES HISTORY OF JACKSON BAND PROGRAM
Dr. Carol McDowell, assistant professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University, recently published a book about the history of the Jackson High School band program from 1920 to 1998.
McDowell, an alumnus of Jackson High School and Southeast, compiled The History of the Band Program at Jackson High School as a tribute to Nick Leist, a Southeast graduate and former band director at Jackson who was retiring at the time she was attending Florida State University. She began researching old Silver Arrow yearbooks as part of an historical research project for her doctoral degree. One of her professors suggested that she should compile the research into a book.
As a Jackson band student playing the flute, McDowell remembers that it was the encouragement and dedication of her teachers that developed the band program and inspired graduates of the program to continue into a career in music education. "Both of my teachers (at Jackson), Pat Schwent and Nick Leist, I would say are responsible for me choosing music as a career," said McDowell.
McDowell said she hopes the book will appeal to various generations who have participated in the Jackson High School band program. The book contains 78 years of history and photographs along with interviews with former band directors, Leist and LeRoy Mason and Dr. Mark Scully, former Jackson High School principal who went on to become the president of Southeast and who hired Mason at the University.
The book was published by Stewart Printing and Publishing Co. in Marble Hill, Mo., as a graduation gift from her parents, Erma and Joe McDowell. The book is available at Super Styles hair salon in Jackson and at Southeast Bookstore on campus or can be ordered by contacting Dr. McDowell at (573) 986-6735.
POLJAN NAMED DIRECTOR OF UNIVERSITY CENTER
Mary Kay Poljan, formerly assistant director and interim director of the University Center at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named director of the University Center. Poljan has been serving as interim director of the University Center since last March. She served as assistant director of the University Center-operations from July 1995 to March 1999.
Poljan has more than 10 years of experience working across the country in all aspects of the programs, facilities and services that the University Center offers.
"I am passionate about what I do and am dedicated to the Southeast community," she said.
A Search Committee selected Poljan following a regional search process, that included posting of the position on the Internet. She completed a full day of interviews on campus with University staff, faculty, administrators and students.
Members of the Search Committee were Dr.Dale Haskell, director of the Freshman Year Experience; Judy St. John, director of the Center for Health and Counseling; Brett Richardson, Residence Life hall director, Michele Irby, assistant director of the University Center; Drew Griffin, Residence Life senior community assistant; and Kelly Platt, University Center building manager.
Loren Rullman, director of Student Auxiliary Services at Southeast, said, "I am very pleased that Mary Kay will continue to serve Southeast in this new role. She brings to us many years of experience in University Center programs, services and facilities management at other universities. I have great confidence in her abilities and know that the University will be well served by her as director."
Poljan says her vision for the University Center is that it be "an integral part of the campus community.
"As the family room of campus, the University Center's programs, services and facilities should bring members of the community together to engage in open dialogue and the exchange of ideas," she said. "The University Center should enhance a student's educational experience by providing opportunities for involvement, self-governance and self-directed activities."
As director, Poljan will be responsible for the direction and development of the University Center, including management of the 102,000-square-foot facility, scheduling of campus facilities, coordinating summer conferences, overseeing the University Center's programs and services, and for developing and supporting a comprehensive student involvement program. This includes student activities, fraternity and sorority advising and student leadership development.
As interim director of the University Center, Poljan has been responsible for financial management, staff supervision and fraternity and sorority advising. In addition, she has managed a $2.9 million auxiliary budget and supervised more than 30 student and full-time employees. As assistant director of the University Center, she worked extensively with computerized reservations, coordinated Southeast's summer camps and conferences programs, recruited, trained and evaluated student employees and managed a computerized all-campus reservations system. She also assisted with the request for proposal for a seven-year food service contract, served on a variety of University committees and provided logistical support for major University events. Poljan also has supervised the coordinator of student involvement, advised the Student Activities Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council and provided support to leadership development programs and more than 100 student organizations.
Prior to her employment at Southeast, Poljan served as director of student activities and orientation at Occidental College, assistant director of Lane Center and Campus Activities at Frostburg State University and director of student activities at Tiffin University. She has been a member of the Association of College Unions International, the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors, the National Association of Campus Activities, the National Orientation Directors Association, the American College Personnel Association and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. In addition, she serves on the KRCU Advisory Board and plays in the Southeast Missouri State University Orchestra.
