SOUTHEAST ANNOUNCES FIRST DAY SPRING ENROLLMENT FIGURES

Preliminary unofficial figures indicate spring semester enrollment at Southeast Missouri State University will be about the same as in spring 1999.

Total headcount at Southeast stood at 7,526 on Jan. 18, the first day of spring semester classes. The figure is expected to increase by several hundred before the official census is taken in the fourth week of the semester.

Total undergraduate student headcount is 6,614, almost the same as the 6,683 on the first day last year. Total graduate student headcount stands at 912, almost the same as the 922 reported on opening day in spring 1999.

The report shows: returning freshmen headcount at 1,593, up 12.2 percent from spring 1999, reflecting the large number of freshmen who enrolled at Southeast this fall. The University has fewer juniors and senior than last year, 1,360 and 1,855 respectively, reflecting the smaller freshman classes three and four years ago. Sophomore headcount is 1,300, which is roughly the same as last year.

The number of degree seeking master's students stands at 642, up 4.4 percent from spring 1999. Total headcount for graduate students in the specialist program stands at 96, up nearly 13 percent from this time last year. Today's report also shows doctoral headcount at 13, up from 7 at this time last spring.

The official spring semester census report will be available after Feb. 11.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS INVITED TO 'SHOW ME DAY' FEB. 5

Prospective students and their parents are invited to "Show Me Day" Feb. 5 on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

"Show Me Day," scheduled for noon in the University Center, is an opportunity for all individuals interested in attending college to take a closer look at Southeast and check out the numerous options Southeast provides, said Stacy Busch, Southeast admissions counselor.

The day's events will begin with a "College Fair" in which students may browse through informational displays of the University's various academic departments. Professors from each department will be on hand to answer questions, Busch said. Students also will be able to get information about the total Southeast experience, from career choices, academic majors and residence life to financial aid, career services and student activities.

Following the "College Fair" portion of the day, students and parents will hear brief presentations from Jay Goff, Southeast director of admissions; Dr. Kimberly Barrett, associate provost and dean of students; and Tanya Efken, president of Student Government.

Students and their parents will break up into small groups to tour the campus. Busch said both walking and bus tours will be available, and students will have the opportunity to view a Southeast residence hall room. After campus tours, a financial aid and residence life presentation will be given. The day's activities will end with a reception.

If you are interested in registering for Show Me day, call the Admissions Office at (573) 651-2590.

SOUTHEAST ENSEMBLE, FACULTY FEATURED IN PERFORMANCE FOR MISSOURI MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION

The 2,500-member Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) has invited the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble to open its 2000 Conference and Clinic next week with a concert at Tan-Tar-A at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The ensemble was selected for this honor through taped auditions and is only one of three Missouri college groups invited to perform at the conference. Also featured on this concert will be Southeast faculty members Dr. James Sifferman, as piano soloist, and Paul Thompson, flute soloist.

Prior to the MMEA performance, the students and faculty members will present community concerts in Mexico, Mo., and Columbia, Mo., as well as school concerts and clinics in Mexico, Warrenton, Mo., Columbia and Jefferson City, Mo.

The Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble provides Southeast students, both music majors and non-music majors, with exposure to the finest wind and percussion literature. This ensemble has distinguished itself in recent years with performances at five MMEA conferences and two divisional meetings of the College Band Directors National Association. During this same period, the ensemble has performed eight world premieres and 11 American premieres of works for contemporary wind band. The students have had the opportunity work with composers and conductors such as Karel Husa, Normand Lockwood, Don Freund, Jim Croft, Ray Cramer, Richard Strange, Frigyes Hidas (Hungary) Laszlo Marosi (Hungary), Geir Knutson (Norway) and Col. Jaroslav Gorbal (Ukraine).

Dr. Robert Gifford, professor of music and coordinator of winds and percussion at Southeast, is the conductor of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Gifford currently is serving as Government Relations/Coalition Chair of the Missouri Music Educators Association and president of the Southwest Division of MENC: The National Association for Music Education.

MISSOURI COLLEGE BAND DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION HONORS SOUTHEAST STUDENTS

The Missouri Chapter of the College Band Directors National Association has selected eight members of the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble to perform in the 2000 Missouri All-Collegiate Band.

Membership in the All-Collegiate Band is an honor for young musicians much like a young athlete's selection for an All-State team, said Dr. Robert Gifford, director of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Twenty-six college and University band programs from around the state will be represented in the All-Collegiate Band.

"Southeast is pleased to have eight students selected," Gifford said.
