SOUTHEAST SPRING FAMILY WEEKEND SET FOR FEB. 15-17
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 18, 2002 – "The Spirit of Southeast" is the theme for Southeast Missouri State University's Spring Family Weekend, February 15-17. The weekend event will feature a variety of activities for Southeast students and their family members.
On Friday, Feb. 15, an information table will be available in the lobby of the Towers residence halls from 4-7 p.m. Family members can get information about the weekend, ask any questions they may have and get campus directions. Students can take their parents and families to dinner at either Towers or Café Court in the University Center. At Towers, the price is $4.90 per person – all you can eat. Café Court's prices will vary, depending on what is purchased.
Friday night will be highlighted with a Stargazing event at the University Farm with Dr. Michael Cobb, Southeast professor of physics. He will lead a guided tour of the night sky with special stops at the planets Jupiter and Saturn. Carpools will leave the Rhodes Hall parking lot at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held at the same time and location on Saturday, Feb. 16.
On Saturday, Feb. 16, families can start the day off by visiting an open house for international business programs or the University Museum, or they can visit with the college of liberal arts to discuss changes and innovations in the many departments. Residence life will provide an opportunity for students and families to take a sneak peak at the new residence hall, a five-story, suite-style hall which is currently being built just west of Myers Hall.
At 4 p.m. Saturday, the University will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Aileen Wehking Alumni Center on the grounds of Wildwood. Members of the National Alumni Council, alumni, staff and students of the University as well as members of the community are invited to celebrate the ceremonial turning of the dirt for a new state-of-the-art alumni center. Expected to be completed in late fall 2002, the new Wehking Alumni Center will serve the program needs of the Alumni Association and will house the operations of the Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
Family events will highlight Saturday evening, which begins with family bowling at 4 p.m. at West Park Lanes in Cape Girardeau. Commuters and adult learners are invited to bring their families and friends for an evening of bowling sponsored by the Office of Student Life, Adult Learners Association and Chi Sigma Omega. Southeast families, students and alumni are invited to join a celebration of the "Spirit of Southeast" at a pre-game dinner from 5-7 p.m. – Saturday at the Southeast Student Recreation Center. To order tickets, call (573) 651-5910. For a complete buffet meal, including drinks and dessert, cost is $8.50 for adults, $4.50 for children ages 6-12, and free to children under 6. Southeast students can use their meal plans.
Following the dinner the Southeast women's and men's basketball teams will face the Racers of Murray State University in one of the greatest rivalries in the Ohio Valley Conference. The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the men's team will follow at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $9 and $11, depending on the seat location within the Show Me Center, and tickets for children ages 3-18 are discounted. Saturday evening also offers a concert from the Commerce Bank Concert series entitled "Inspirations From the Baroque," at Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau at 8 p.m. The Southeast Chamber Orchestra will perform works from the Baroque period to today. The program will open with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, featuring Southeast's Gary Miller on the solo part for harpsichord. This concert also will present two contemporary works by composers deeply indebted to Bach: "Song of the Birds" by cellist Pablo Casals and "Simple Symphony" by Benjamin Britten. Ticket prices vary and can be purchased by calling (573) 651-2141. This concert is sponsored by Commerce Bank and the University's Department of Music.
On Sunday morning students and their families may attend Brunch with the President at 9:30 a.m. at the University Center, where Dr. Kenneth W. Dobbins, University president, will host the annual Family Weekend Brunch. Cost is only $6.50 for adults and $5 for children six to 12. Children under 6 can eat free, and Southeast students can use their meal plan. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
Religious services will be offered during the weekend. The Catholic Campus Ministries will hold Saturday evening Mass at 4 p.m. in the St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel on the Southeast campus. The Lutheran Student Fellowship will have Sunday morning worship at the Chapel of Hope at 11 a.m., followed by a free meal in the Student Activities Center.

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONIES PLANNED FEB. 16 FOR WEHKING ALUMNI CENTER
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 18, 2002 – Groundbreaking ceremonies are planned for Feb. 16 for the new Aileen Wehking Alumni Center at Southeast Missouri State University.
The event is planned for 4 p.m. on the North Campus next to Wildwood. A reception will be held after the groundbreaking, followed by a Spirit of Southeast Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center and Southeast vs. Murray State women's and men's basketball games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. respectively in the Show Me Center. The RECess program for children will be available during both games.
Cost of the dinner is $8.50 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 6-12. The dinner is free for children under 6. Southeast students may use their meal plan to attend. The $1.2 million two-story glass and stucco alumni center will be located southeast of Wildwood and will be designed to blend in with the architectural style of Wildwood, the official home of University presidents. Wildwood currently is used for entertaining and receptions for guests.
The privately-funded building will house the University Advancement Division, which consists of Alumni Services and the Southeast Missouri University Foundation. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held in a heated tent. A contractor for the project has not yet been named. However, the building is expected to be completed by Oct. 19, so dedication ceremonies can be held during Homecoming weekend.
The building will be located just to the east of the row of trees that border the Wildwood driveway on the east side. Those trees will be retained and will provide shade for the new facility.
"That was very important to a lot of people that those trees remain," said Tom Hadler, Facilities Management project manager for the building.
Visitors will enter the 7,400-square-foot building from the upper floor. The building, which will slope to the east and contain two full stories on the east side, will have six offices on the upper floor and two offices with the potential for up to four more on the lower floor. The building also will feature a large forum space for receptions on the north side of the upper floor. This area will be adjacent to an outdoor covered area, which will connect to Wildwood. The building also will be ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) accessible with an elevator contained in the facility. Visitors with disabilities will be able to take the elevator to the lower floor, where they then may enter Wildwood from the lower level of that structure.
Wildwood has traditionally been the official home of the University president. Current Southeast President, Dr. Kenneth W. Dobbins, chose not to move into the residence when he took the presidency in 1999. However, Dobbins still uses the house for official university functions, dinners and entertainment programs and will continue to do so, even with the addition of the new facility. The 8,800-square-foot, three-story home was originally built in the late 1800's with horse stables and later a large stone wine cellar.
Plans call for a separate garage at Wildwood to be removed to make way for a better connection between Wildwood and the new building. Parking for the new building will be in an existing lot off of the Greek Drive extension. Those parking in the lot may access the alumni center via a sidewalk that will run between the two.
The Wehking Alumni Center currently is located off of Sprigg Street, in front of the Show Me Center. The University Advancement Division long has needed a facility designed for meetings and receptions and for entertaining guests. The current facility is not designed to handle those types of functions.
SOUTHEAST ANNOUNCES FIRST DAY SPRING ENROLLMENT FIGURES
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 15, 2002 – Preliminary unofficial first day enrollment figures indicate total 2002 spring enrollment exceeding 7,900 at Southeast Missouri State University.
Total combined undergraduate and graduate student headcount stands at 7,917 today, up 2.8 percent from this time a year ago. Total undergraduate student headcount on opening day this spring was 6,961, up 1.9 percent from spring 2001. Spring 2002 classes began Jan. 14 at Southeast.
Today's report shows beginning freshmen headcount at 88, down from 119 at this time last year. Returning freshmen headcount stands at 1,672, up 6.7 percent from spring 2001. Sophomore headcount is 1,471, down 14 from this time last year. Junior headcount stands at 1,530, up 155 from spring 2001. Senior headcount stands at 1,900, up 81 from this time last year.
Total graduate student headcount stands at 958, up 85 from spring 2001. The number of degree seeking master's students stands at 658, up 55 from this time last year. The number of non-degree seeking graduate students stands at 200, up 22 from spring 2001. Total headcount for graduate students in the specialist program stands at 90, up 11 from this time last year. Today's report also shows doctoral headcount at 8, roughly the same as last year's 11 on opening day.
An official census will be taken at the conclusion of the fourth week of spring semester classes, said Dr. Pauline Fox, vice president for administration and enrollment management. The official census will be available after Feb. 8.
CONSTRUCTION ON SHOW ME CENTER ADDITION UNDER WAY
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 18, 2002 – Construction on an addition to the Show Me Center, that will provide the facility with additional storage space and new office space for the men's and women's basketball programs, is currently under way.
The two-story addition on the northeast side of the Show Me Center will provide the facility with an additional 5,000 square feet of storage space. The Show Me Center currently has only 3,000 square feet of storage space. In addition, offices for the staffs of the men's and women's basketball programs will be relocated into a new 2,500-square-foot space.
The storage space will be located on the lower level of the addition, immediately east of the loading dock area, with the coaching offices to be located upstairs on the second floor of the addition.
"We're just very excited and looking forward to a successfully completed project," said Neil Zlokovich, Facilities Management project manager for design.
The construction of an addition to the Show Me Center is needed to provide adequate storage space for support of the wide variety of events held at the facility and to provide new offices for the men's and women's basketball programs.
"Storage space is a major issue as it concerns the Show Me Center," said Dr. Pauline Fox, vice president for administration and enrollment management.
"We need the additional space desperately," said David Ross, director of the Show Me Center. "We've needed it for 10 years."
"Storage for event support has been inadequate for several years and has created the need to use off-site storage," Fox said. "This also has limited the efficiency of operations."
Lack of adequate storage space also has limited the expansion of the Show Me Center's capabilities and has increased the labor costs for events.
Currently the two basketball programs share office space with the Show Me Center administration. This arrangement is restrictive to the needs of all three units, Fox said. Relocating the coaching staffs to the new space, will allow the Show Me Center administrative staff to use all of the current Show Me Center administrative office space.
The $1.5 million project is being funded from a number of sources. The Show Me Center's Pepsi Exclusivity payment is providing $200,000, and athletics fund raising is assisting with $300,000. The University is loaning the Show Me Center $500,000, and an additional $500,000 is coming from the Show Me Center Fund Balance. The University's loan to the Show Me Center is a 10-year interest-free loan. Repayment will be from a number of sources including, but not limited to scoreboard advertising revenue.
The project is expected to be completed by September. Kiefner Brothers Construction of Cape Girardeau is the contractor for the project.
Ross says the Show Me Center is bringing in a storage trailer to temporarily store items during the construction period. Also, during construction, the first tier of parking on the north side of the Show Me Center, closest to the building, will not be available due to the staging of equipment.
BYRD NAMED INTERIM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS FOR MINORITY STUDENT RECRUITMENT
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 17, 2002 – Alan Byrd of Cape Girardeau, admissions counselor at Southeast Missouri State University, has been named interim assistant director of admissions for minority student recruitment at Southeast.
The appointment is effective Feb. 1. In his new position, Byrd will be responsible for advancing minority student recruitment efforts as a component of Southeast's admissions program.
As an admissions counselor, Byrd has extensive experience counseling high school students through the college admission and financial aid process. He has participated in scholarship administration and special event planning and conducted extensive telecounseling in the recruitment of new students. He has recruited students from the northern Missouri and Kansas City territories and coordinated admission for the University Academy, an alternative admission program.
Formerly of St. Louis, Byrd is a 1999 graduate of Southeast, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications with a minor in business administration. He currently is completing coursework towards a master of science in administration degree at Southeast.
As an undergraduate student, Byrd served as editor of the Capaha Arrow, Southeast's student newspaper, and as a defensive back on the Southeast Missouri State football team. He also was and continues to serve as a tutor for the Upward Bound program, was treasurer of the Society of Professional Journalists, and a coach in the Cape Girardeau Church Basketball League. He has served as a public relations intern with Bi-State Development Agency in St. Louis.
Byrd replaces Shani Lenore, who has resigned to accept a position with St. Louis University.
KRCU VALENTINE DINNER-DANCE SCHEDULED FOR FEB. 9
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 18, 2002 -- KRCU will host its fourth annual Valentine Dinner and Dance sponsored by the Saint Francis Heart Institute Feb. 9 at the Osage Center.
This year's event will begin at 7 p.m. with dancing to follow at 8 p.m. The Southeast Big Band will perform.
KRCU began this annual tradition in 1998, drawing as many as 250 people in attendance. Proceeds from the event will benefit KRCU.
This year's event is expected to draw an even larger crowd, with a buffet dinner menu that will feature a choice of two entrees (beef or chicken), salad, potatoes, rice, vegetables, rolls and a special valentine desert.
The hot swing sounds of the Southeast Big Band, under the direction of Barry Bernhardt, will fill the hall with dance music from 8 to 11 p.m.
"Everything is taken care of for you," said KRCU General Manager Greg Petrowich. "We set the table, provide the music, and even clean up afterward. All that's required of our guests is that they bring their dancing shoes and have a good time with their friends."

MISSOURI POET TO READ FROM HER WORKS FEB. 7
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 18, 2002 -- Missouri poet and editor Catie Rosemurgy will read from her original works at 7 p.m. Feb. 7 in Crisp Hall Auditorium Room 125.
She also will sign copies of her recent and critically-acclaimed book, My Favorite Apocalypse, which is published by the prestigious Graywolf Press. Her fearless poems risk topics from coming-of-age to Mick Jagger, in a style that critics have compared to Yeats and Lorca.
Her work has appeared in such places as Ploughshares, Poetry Northwest, River Styx, Michigan Quarterly Review and The Best American Poetry 1997. She teaches creative writing at Northwest Missouri State University, where she also co-edits The Laurel Review.
