Denim Day

Event Description:
As a part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), the Campus Violence Prevention Program and Counseling, and Disability Services invites Southeast faculty, staff, and students to participate in Denim Day on April 29. Take a stand against victim blaming and destructive attitudes about sexual assault by wearing jeans and joining the campus photo at noon in front of Academic Hall. Peer educators will staff a table with free Denim Day pins and cards, SAAM ribbons, hand outs on healthy sexuality, and giveaways. The story behind Denim Day begins in 1997 when a teenage girl in Rome, was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor. After he was convicted of the crime and sentenced to jail, the instructor appealed his sentence and the conviction was overturned in the Italian Supreme Court. The head judge stated that because the victim wore tight jeans, he assumed she must have helped remove them, implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. Victim blaming contributes to the high number of sexual assaults that go unreported. Survivors often fear being blamed and judged and therefore do not seek the support they need, suffering silently and alone. Send a message to survivors that Southeast is a safe place to seek help by participating in Denim Day.
