FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ORIGINAL TAPESTRY ART WEAVINGS TO BE DISPLAYED JULY 11 IN KENT LIBRARY

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., July 3, 2003 -- An exhibit of original, tapestry art weavings, "Life Expressions in Tapestry," will be on display in Kent Library on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University beginning July 11.

A reception will be held in the Kent Library lobby from noon to 1 p.m. July 11. The showing is a culmination of a four-week summer workshop in which individual students and artists developed original, creative designs. Pat Reagan, fiber artist for the Department of Art, taught the Experimental Tapestry Weaving Workshop.

Thirteen people were involved in the process of creating woven tapestries based on a variety of images and personal expressions. Taking a contemporary approach, the Experimental Tapestry Weaving class was introduced to basic tapestry weaving techniques, using a variety of fiber materials. Students built their own Navajo looms on which to weave their tapestries which are larger than 30 inches by 45 inches. They experimented with their own personal designs and colors and selected materials that reflected their individuality. The result is a fascinating display of imagination and artistry, created by hand, using an ancient craft to create a contemporary look.

The exhibit will feature the work of the following artists:

  • Carrie Giesler of Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
  • Rebecca Winkler of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
  • Christine Spence of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
  • Melissa Caneer of Kennett, Mo.
  • Lora Adams of Patton, Mo.
  • Deana Ward of Poplar Bluff, Mo.
  • Lauren Ervin of Bloomsdale, Mo.
  • Kelli McFarland of Desoto, Mo.
  • Abby Ingalsbe of West Plains, Mo.
  • Chizuko Atsumi of Hamamatsu, Japan
  • Jessica McGee of Viburnum, Mo.
  • Molly Wisniewski of St. Louis, Mo.
  • Jessica Forys of Nashville Ill.

The exhibit will remain on display through Sept. 6. Kent Library is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays; 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Fridays, and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays.
