FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE REGENTS GRANT POST-PROFESSORIAL MERIT, FACULTY PROMOTIONS
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 27, 2003 – The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents granted post-professorial merit to 35 faculty members, the first of whom to be granted this new designation, during a closed session meeting of the Board June 27.
The new post-professorial increment is a new voluntary additional step in the current promotion process recommended in a new Faculty Merit Bill and approved by the Board of Regents last October. Under the bill, faculty become eligible to apply for post-professorial merit five years after attaining the rank of full professor and every five years thereafter.
Those who have been at the rank of professor for five or more years were eligible to apply for post-professorial merit during the first application process this year. Those awarded this distinction met the same criteria of sustained service, teaching and scholarship as that required for promotion to full professor, following the same process of peer and administrative review.
“Of the 86 professors who were eligible, 47 applied and 35 were awarded post-professorial merit,” said Dr. Jane Stephens, Southeast provost.
Stephens added that the 47 who applied for the post-professorial rank this year did so with only three months to prepare their record of service.
“A considerable number of professors received this designation, which is really outstanding and quite commendable,” she said. “This really speaks volumes to the quality of the faculty at Southeast Missouri State University and the ongoing excellence they seek of themselves in the areas of teaching, professional growth and service to the University.”
