The workshops, scheduled for June 28 and July 26, are based on the Moser exhibition, which opened May 27 at the University Museum. Barry Moser is an illustrator and designer of more than 250 books, including Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1982), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1983), and L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986). He has received numerous awards for his illustrations such as the National Book Award for Design and Illustration and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award.

The workshops will allow children ages 9-12 to explore Moser's prints of literary characters in the museum galleries and investigate how art adds to or changes a story. They will explore characters like the Cheshire Cat from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Huckleberry Finn from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. They also will create prints of their own using block printing and lithography techniques. The workshops will be held in the University Museum Galleries located in 122 Memorial Hall.

The same program will be offered on both workshop days, which are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Snacks will be provided, and students may bring a sandwich. A $5 supply fee is required. Enrollment is limited, and supply fees must be received in the Museum to hold a student's place. Please register early as the Museum reserves the right to cancel the workshops due to low enrollment. The Moser exhibition, on which the workshops are based, includes selections from Moser's work that highlight themes of travel and pilgrimage. These journeys may be real, imaginary, or psychological. Selected prints from 17 books, including Dante's Inferno by Allen Mandelbaum (1980), Time Life Books' Jack & the Beanstalk: Giants & Ogres (1985), and The Pennyroyal Caxton Bible (1999), will be on view. The Moser exhibition will remain on display in the University Museum through Aug. 10. The Museum is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. and weekends 12-4 p.m. It will be closed July 4-6.

In addition to the workshops, the University Museum also is offering free youth group tours this summer. The tours will incorporate excerpts from popular stories and include an art-making component. The tours will be offered June 2 -Aug. 7. Tours are available Monday-Thursday at 9:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. No tours will be offered July 2 -3, and there will be no 9:30 a.m. tours July 7-10.
