CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., May 16, 2003 - The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents today approved the preliminary design for the River Campus Terrace Park, to be located on the east side of the former St. Vincent's College and Seminary property, running from north to south along Aquamsi Drive.

Designs for the park, which were approved by the River Campus Board of Managers April 21, call for a pergola on the south side of the property adjacent to the parking lot, construction of a pavilion overlooking the River, informational signs about the plant life, geographical significance and history of the site, a recognition feature for businesses and individuals who contribute to the Emerson Bridge lighting project, benches, a small parking area and pedestrian trails.

In Spring 2001, Southeast was awarded nearly $260,000 in federal money through the Missouri Department of Transportation for development of the terrace project.

"This component of the River Campus is going to be a great addition," said Kenneth W.Dobbins, president of Southeast Missouri State University.

Numerous well established trees grow on the site, including the state champion beech tree, and exposed rock outcroppings abutting Aquamsi Drive add to the beauty of this area, University officials say. Plans call for the trail to run north from the pergola, circle the beech tree and angle west and north to Morgan Oak.

The trail will link up to a loop that would follow Spanish Street north in the downtown area, circle around on the river side of the floodwall continuing south, and then cross Aquamsi onto the River Campus, said Al Stoverink, director of Facilities Management at Southeast.

The Terrace project is expected to begin late this summer.
