MISSOURI CONFERENCE ON HISTORY TO BE HELD APRIL 24-26

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 21, 2003 – Southeast Missouri State University will host the 45th Annual Missouri Conference on History entitled “Exploration and Discovery” April 24-26.

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn in Cape Girardeau.

“This is the third time Southeast has hosted the conference,” said Dr. J. Christopher Schnell, Southeast professor of history and president of the Missouri Conference on History Steering Committee. “Scholars from all over the Midwest will attend the conference. Next year, the conference will be held at the Missouri Archives in Jefferson City.”

The conference will feature papers and panels on the broad themes of exploration and discovery through time in Missouri, the United States and the world. Presentations will be offered in history, historic preservation and public history.

A business meeting and awards luncheon will be held on April 25 at noon in the Holiday Inn’s Sierra Room. The luncheon address will be presented by Lynn Dumenil of Occidental College. Dumenil’s address is entitled “World War I, Citizenship and the State.”

On April 25, a concurrent session will be held at 3:30 p.m. entitled “The Kennedy Assassination and Southeast Missouri: Local Responses and Connections.” It will be presented by Patrick Huber of the University of Missouri-Rolla, and Steve Richardet of the Cape Girardeau Public Schools.

A banquet and the H.H. Dugger Lecture will be held on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn’s Sierra Room. The lecture, entitled “Presence of the Past,” will be presented by David Thelen of Indiana University.

On April 26, a closing luncheon will be held at noon in the Holiday Inn’s Sierra Room. The closing address, entitled “Grant as Commander,” will be presented by John Simon of the U.S. Grant Association in the Morris Library at Southern Illinois University.
