The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom.

In addition to the appearance of Southeast faculty member Michael Dean performing "The Pre-Goodman Rag" for clarinet by Malcolm Arnold, senior music major and pianist Tyson Wunderlich will perform George Gershwin's famous "Rhapsody in Blue." The Gershwin piece will be performed in its original version, orchestrated by Paul Whiteman.

Dean, assistant professor of clarinet and saxophone at Southeast, holds degrees in clarinet performance from Texas Tech, the University of Colorado and the University of Texas at Arlington. Dean is an active recitalist, clinician and chamber musician, having appeared throughout the United States. He recently performed a recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Prior to his appointment at Southeast, Dean held faculty positions at Southern Utah University, McMurry University and Eastfield College.

Wunderlich is a native of Altenburg, Mo., where he began piano lessons at the age of 10. In 1999, he was awarded a Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarship at Southeast and is currently a senior piano major, studying with James Sifferman. Wunderlich has performed public recitals each year of his study at Southeast and has won first place statewide in the Missouri Federated Music Clubs Competition in 2002, as well as the Southeast Concerto and Aria Competition in 2000 and 2002. He also has been a performing member of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and accompanist for the University Choir during his career at Southeast. Wunderlich recently received notification that he has been accepted into the prestigious wind conducting degree program at the New England Conservatory of Music. He has been a conducting student of Gifford.

In addition to three marches by John Philip Sousa, the program also will include a performance by the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of Frank Zappa's composition entitled "Dog Breath Variations." Zappa's proclivity for titles to his music and even his publishing endeavors, is matched by his genius in blending "pop" and "classical" elements into one composition.

Master of Ceremonies for the evening's entertainment will be Dr. Tom Harte, host of "Café Concerto" on KRCU 90.9 FM and Southeast professor emeritus of speech communication and theatre.

The numerous invitations that the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble has received to perform at state and regional conferences are indicative of the respect that this group has earned both for quality of performances and innovative programming. The group has presented 11 world premieres, along with more than a dozen American premieres of works for the contemporary wind band and has performed for both the Missouri Music Educators Association and the College Band Directors National Association.

Concert parking will be available in lots 18 and TCD, just across from the University Center. Handicapped parking will be available, with street-level elevator access.
