ORGANIZATIONAL MEETINGS AT KENNETT, MALDEN FOR MASTER'S PROGRAMS IN ELEMENTARY, SECONDARY EDUCATION

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 11, 2003 -- Cohort organizational meetings for Southeast Missouri State University's off-campus delivery of a program of courses leading towards a master of arts in elementary education degree and a master of arts in secondary education degree are planned in the upcoming weeks in both Kennett and Malden, Mo.

The organizational meetings are being held to answer questions and register prospective eligible students for admission to the programs.

Master of Arts in Elementary Education Degree

Prospective students for the master of arts in elementary education degree program are asked to attend a meeting at 4:30 p.m. April 23 at the Kennett Area Higher Education Center (KAHEC) or at 6 p.m. April 29 at the Crisp Bootheel Education Center (CBEC) in Malden. Dr. Eleanor Duff, Chair of the Department of Elementary and Special Education and others, will be on hand to answer questions about the program.

This program of studies will begin this summer with two courses online and a third one delivered at the CBEC. On-site coursework will be provided throughout theprogram at the Malden and Kennett centers with classes located in a manner to require the least amount of travel time for the majority of students.

The two-year master of arts in elementary education degree program will feature the choice of emphasis areas in reading, mathematics/science or early childhood. The coursework for this program will be delivered primarily by two methods: online and face-to-face at the off-campus centers. Scheduling of on-site classes will include weekend classes.

Master of Arts in Secondary Education Degree

Prospective students for the master of arts in secondary education degree program are asked to meet at 5 p.m. April 30 at the CBEC in Malden or at 5 p.m. May 6 at KAHEC. Dr. Fred Yeo, chair of the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, will be on hand to answer questions about the program. Admission requirements and transfer of credit opportunities will be discussed.

Dr. Rick Hux, director of the CBEC, and Marsha Blanchard, director of KAHEC, will be on hand to discuss the program's delivery model, register students and coordinate site locations for student instruction.

The program of studies will begin this summer and will be delivered simultaneously at several sites -- KAHEC in Kennett, the CBEC in Malden and at local school districts in the Bootheel area where sufficient numbers of students can be enrolled. Students will be able to attend the site most convenient to them for coursework during this two-year program.

The coursework will be delivered through interactive instructional television (ITV), on site and via web-based classes.

"These are somewhat accelerated programs and are designed to be delivered in the most accessible and convenient manner for the students who are, in many cases, practicing teachers," Hux said.

During meetings for both programs, representatives of Southeast Missouri State University will further explain details of the program and enroll students. This will be the final opportunity for students to be considered for admission and enroll in the programs that begin this summer.
