The lecture will be held in Glenn Auditorium of Dempster Hall during Common Hour from noon to 1:30 p.m. This event is open to the campus community and the public.

Simon is currently a member of the faculty at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and director of the Public Policy Institute. He served in the Illinois legislature for 14 years and was elected for one term as Illinois lieutenant governor. He also served 22 years in the U. S. Congress, including two terms in the U.S. Senate. In 1988 and 1992, he was a candidate for the American presidency.

Simon is the author or co-author of 16 books, and has received 47 honorary degrees. During his tenure in public service, he was known for defending the voting rights of all Americans, his efforts to alleviate world hunger and his support of sustainable environmental policies. He also was actively engaged in U.S. foreign policy making, including American intervention into Somalia, Haiti and Bosnia.
