FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANNUAL STUDENT JURIED ART EXHIBITION OPENS MARCH 28

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 14, 2003 - The Department of Art at Southeast Missouri State University announces the Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition.

The exhibition will be held on campus in the University Museum in Memorial Hall from March 28 to April 17. An opening reception is planned for 4 to 6 p.m. on April 4 to celebrate the excellence of the student work. Awards will be given at that time. Students, families and the general public are encouraged to attend. Many of the artworks will be for sale.

The exhibition is a showcase for works created by students in their classes during the past year. In late March, they submit at least two pieces for judging by an outside professional juror. This year, Stephen Black, a professor of art and design at Vincennes University at Vincennes, Ind., is the juror.

From more than 300 entries of paintings, sculpture, drawings, fine crafts, graphic designs, prints and illustrations, he will select 30 to 40 works to hang in the Museum. Black also will write an assessment report on the overall quality of creative work that is being done in all of the art studios at Southeast.

Artwork that is not selected will become a part of another exhibition following a 200-year-old-tradition called the "Show of the Refusals" or the "Salon de Refuse." As was French art history during the mid-1800s, Parisian artists declared that their work was worthy of public display despite the judges' personal tastes. Southeast art students will install their creative projects at the Schock Community Art Center located on 116 East Hickey in Scott City, Mo. An opening reception will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on April 4.

The exhibitions will remain on display until April 17, and the Museum welcomes visitors from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday and noon to 4 p.m. each weekend.

In connection with the exhibit, the juror, Stephen Black, will present a lecture at 11 a.m. on March 26 in the University Center Ballroom. The lecture will be open to the campus community and the public.
