UNIVERSITY WIND ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM PREMIERE OF WORK BY SOUTHEAST COMPOSER ROBERT FRUEHWALD

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., March 7, 2003 - The Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble will present its third concert of the season March 27, featuring the premiere of a new composition by Southeast Missouri State University faculty member and composer, Robert Fruehwald.

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Academic Auditorium on the Southeast campus. Parking will be available in the Dempster lots (Harrison College of Business) with shuttle bus service to Academic Hall. Handicapped parking is available behind Academic Auditorium, with street-level elevator access.

Fruehwald has degrees from the University of Louisville, California Institute of the Arts and Washington University in St. Louis. His compositions have appeared on concerts sponsored by Calarts New Music Festival, Kentucky Composers Concerts, Western Illinois New Music Festival, St. Louis Symphony Discovery Series, FootNotes Dance Theater, National Flute Association, Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra, United Nations and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. This is his third composition written for and premiered by the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Also included on this concert will be musical works by Percy Grainger, Frank Zappa and John Philip Sousa. Featured along with the Southeast ensemble will be the Fredericktown High School Wind Ensemble under the leadership of Michael Goldsmith and Mark Ellison.

The numerous invitations that the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble has received to perform at state and regional conference are indicative of the respect that this group has received both for quality of performance and innovative programming. The group has presented 10 world premieres and more than a dozen American premieres of works for the contemporary wind band and has performed for both the Missouri Music Educators and the College Band Directors National Association. The group also has been featured on several compact discs, the latest of which is a new release entitled "Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble LIVE."

General admission is $6. Tickets for senior citizens are $5, and student tickets are $4. University faculty and student tickets are $5. For more information, call (573) 651-2141.
