FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STEINWAY INAUGURAL RECITAL TO BE PERFORMED FEB. 7

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 31, 2003 -- The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University is pleased to announce an inaugural recital on the new Steinway Concert Grand Piano acquired last June by Southeast Missouri State.

The recital will be at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7 in Brandt Music Hall Room 205. The concert is open to the public, with tickets available only at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program will feature four piano majors in the Department of Music, all of whom are recipients of the Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarship. They are Amelie Morgan of Jackson, Mo., Shannon Scott and Tyson Wunderlich, both of Altenburg, Mo., and Matthew Yount of Marble Hill, Mo. The program will also feature a presentation by David Slan, president of Steinway and Sons in St. Louis, as well as performances on the new instrument by several piano performance majors of James Sifferman, associate professor of piano at Southeast.

Sifferman describes the new instrument, saying, "This is a world class piano. I had the pleasure of selecting it personally at Steinway and Sons in New York City. Already, it has had a very positive and significant effect on our music program and in the continuing education and artistic quality of our keyboard students. This piano allows them all to achieve their very best and to compete very successfully in this region. The sky's the limit."

The piano currently is housed in Brandt Hall but will eventually be moved to the concert hall at the River Campus as the main concert piano.
