SOUTHEAST ANNOUNCES FIRST DAY SPRING ENROLLMENT FIGURES

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 22, 2003 - Preliminary unofficial first day enrollment figures indicate total 2003 spring enrollment exceeding 8,300 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Total combined undergraduate and graduate student headcount stands at 8,301 today, up 4.9 percent from this time a year ago. Total undergraduate student headcount on opening day this spring was 7,332, up 5.3 percent from spring 2002. Spring 2003 classes began Jan. 21 at Southeast.

Today's report shows beginning freshmen headcount at 120, up from 88 at this time last year. Returning freshmen headcount stands at 1,635, down 2.2 percent from spring 2002. Sophomore headcount is 1,612, up 9.6 percent from this time last year. Junior headcount is 1,550, up 1.3 percent from spring 2002. Senior headcount is 2,071, up 9 percent from this time last year.

Total graduate student headcount stands at 969, up 13 from spring 2002. The number of degree seeking master's students is 667, up from 658 at this time last year. The number of non-degree seeking graduate students stands at 191, down 9 from spring 2002. Total headcount for graduate students in the specialist program stands at 100, up 10 from this time last year. Today's report also shows doctoral headcount at 11, up 3 from spring 2002.

An official census will be taken at the conclusion of the fourth week of spring semester classes, said Dr. Dennis Holt, vice president for administration and enrollment management. The official census will be available after Feb. 18.
