FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYMPHONY SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT, "ORGAN SPECTACULAR," TO FEATURE NEW ORGAN AT OLD ST. VINCENT'S CHURCH

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 17, 2003 -- The Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will perform its next concert, "Organ Spectacular," in a program Feb. 16 featuring the newly installed organ in Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau.

The organ will be featured on the second half of the concert in several concertos for organ and chamber orchestra. Gary Miller, Southeast Missouri State University professor of music, will be the organ soloist.

Also on the program will be Vivaldi's famous "Spring" Concerto from The Four Seasons. Brandon Christensen, violin professor at Southeast, will be the featured soloist in this perennial Baroque favorite. The concert will take place at 3 p.m.

The concert will open with a suite of dances by the foremost English Baroque composer, Henry Purcell. Next on the program will be the enchanting, memorable "Spring Concerto" by Antonio Vivaldi. The first half of the concert will conclude with another masterwork by a more recent English composer, Sir Edward Elgar; the orchestra will perform his melodious, atmospheric "Serenade for Strings." Paul Thompson, a Southeast faculty member, will be the guest conductor for this work.

The second half of the concert will include Handel's celebrated "Organ Concerto for Organ and Strings." Also on the program will be a "Suite in G Major for Organ and Strings" by Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi. These works will showcase the new organ in a variety of styles and sounds, from the high Baroque to the 20th century.

"We are thrilled and honored to be able to present a program that will feature such a cultural treasure as the new organ in the beautiful setting of Old St. Vincent's Church," said Sara Edgerton, director of the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. "Old St. Vincent's Church is such a religious and cultural landmark in Cape Girardeau, and the installation of this exceptional organ adds so much to the church and the concerts that take place in that setting. We are also excited to be able to perform the Elgar Serenade for Strings and Vivaldi's 'Spring' Concerto in the lovely acoustics of the church. This concert should be very appealing for all of our audience members."

Tickets also will be available for purchase at the door on the day of the concert.
