CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Jan. 10, 2003 - The 2003 Southeast Missouri Honors Wind Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 in Academic Auditorium at Southeast Missouri State University.

This select honor band is comprised of 50 high school students chosen by audition from among several hundred young people representing 60 Missouri school districts.

The program will open with Karl King's musical salute to the national flag entitled "Emblem of Freedom." The poignant "Lied ohne Worte (Song Without Words)" of German composer Rolf Rudin will provide contrast to Kansas composer James Barnes' spirited "Alvamar Overture." The highlight of the evening will be the second performance of "Labyrinth," composed by Missourian and graduate of Southeast, Joseph Pappas. This work was dedicated to and recently premiered by the Southeast Missouri State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Dr. Robert Gifford, Southeast professor of music and conductor of the University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, will conduct the Honors Wind Ensemble. Clinics on each instrument will be presented to the students by members of the Southeast music faculty. The concert is free and open to the public.
