GRISVARD MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED FOR SATURDAY, NOV. 30

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 27, 2002 - A memorial service for Dr. Larry Grisvard, retired professor emeritus, director of theatre and ombudsman at Southeast Missouri State University for 30 years, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 in Forrest H. Rose Theatre.

Grisvard passed away Nov. 14.

The memorial service will feature remarks by Dr. Beth Hill, a former student of Grisvard's who is now a faculty member in Kansas City. Dr. Henry Sessoms, Southeast professor emeritus of English, will present remarks on behalf of Dr. Nolan Porterfield, a former colleague of Grisvard's who will be unable to attend the service. Also speaking will be Grisvard's son, Chris Grisvard, and daughter, Stacia Sanders; Jane Stacy, director of alumni services and development; and Dr. Kenn Stilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. In addition, Grace Courvoisier will perform a ballet to the selection, "Wind Beneath by Wings."

A reception with light refreshments will be held in the Rose Theatre lobby at the conclusion of the service.

Grisvard came to Cape Girardeau in 1959 in the position of director of theater and assistant professor of speech and communications. During this tenure, the speech and theater departments grew not only in size, but programs. After his retirement from Southeast Missouri State University, Grisvard served as a professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in the Communications Department.

Grisvard received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Toledo, a master of arts degree from Bowling Green State University and a doctoral degree from The Ohio State University. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and Blue Key Honorary Society, and one of the original members of the Missouri Council of Arts. He was a member of the Scottish St. Andrew Society of Greater St. Louis, and was presented with a proclamation from the Missouri House of Representatives.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rita Grisvard (nee Konwin) and his three children: Stacia (Jim) Sanders, Christopher Grisvard, and Alexa (Elmer) Buente. He had seven grandchildren: Wesley, Alicia and Jameson Sanders, Samantha and Spencer Grisvard, Alyssa and Braedon Buente. He is also survived by his parents, Lee and Mabel Grisvard.

A funeral Mass was offered Nov. 18 at the St. Francis Xavier (College Church) in St. Louis. Interment was in Resurrection Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Grisvard's memory to Dr. Larry Grisvard BFA Scholarship Fund, One University Plaza, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701, Attn: Jane Stacy.
