FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNIVERSITY WIND SYMPHONY TO OPEN CONCERT SEASON WITH MUSIC FROM 'LORD OF THE RINGS'

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 11, 2002 - The Southeast Missouri State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble's first concert of the season Oct. 24 will feature a variety of music from a Spanish march to a major symphony based upon the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Academic Hall Auditorium.

Dutch composer Johan de Meij's Symphony nr. 1 "The Lord of the Rings" captures the drama and excitement of J.R.R. Tolkien's major literary achievement. The characters, such as the wizard "Gandalf," come to life musically, allowing the listener to relive the adventures and suspense of the novels. This symphony was awarded the first place, $10,000 prize, in the prestigious Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1989. In addition to the beautiful melodic lines contained in Belgian composer Andre Waignein's "Diagram," the folk music of England and Spain are given skillful treatment by Gustav Holst and Jaime Texidor.

The numerous invitations the Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble have received to perform at state and regional conferences are indicative of the respect this group has received both for quality of performance and innovative programming. The group has presented eight world premieres and more than a dozen American premieres of works for the contemporary wind band and has performed for both the Missouri Music Educators and the College Band Directors National Association. The group also has been featured on several compact discs, the latest of which is a new release entitled "Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble LIVE."

Parking will be available in the lots at Robert A. Dempster Hall with shuttle bus service to Academic. Handicapped parking is available behind Academic Auditorium, with street-level elevator access.

General admission is $6. Tickets for senior citizens are $5, and student tickets are $4. University faculty and student tickets are $5.
