CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 11, 2002 -- Southeast Missouri State University's Center for Faulkner Studies has announced the recipient of the 2002 BioKyowa Visiting Japanese Scholar award.

Hisao Tanaka, professor of English and chair of the Department of Integrated Humanities at Hiroshima University Graduate School of Letters, will visit the Southeast campus this month to conduct research in the Brodsky Collection and to participate in a number of cultural exchange activities.

Those activities will include a public lecture on Faulkner's visit to Japan in 1955. That lecture, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Dempster Auditorium in Crisp Hall, will feature the showing of rare film footage of Faulkner in Japan. There is no admission charge, and the public is welcome to attend.

"Professor Tanaka is one of the foremost Faulkner scholars in Japan," noted Kohta Fujiwara, president of BioKyowa, "and our company is extremely pleased to sponsor his visit to this campus and community."

Professor Tanaka is the author of The Tapestry of Proliferation: The World of Faulkner's Fiction (1997) and co-author of Handbook for Research in American Literature and American Studies (1994). He also translated Faulkner's novel, The Hamlet, for inclusion in the Japanese edition of Faulkner's works.

Professor Tanaka has published more than forty articles in various books and journals, treating Hawthorne, Eugene O'Neill, Sherwood Anderson, Thomas Wolfe, and William Styron, as well as Faulkner.
