FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HEADLINE

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Aug. 16, 2002 - Are you looking for discipline strategies that teach responsibility and really work? Discover how to discipline effectively and with integrity. On Saturday, Sept. 21, Child Care Resources and Referral of Southeast Missouri and Success by 6 will host the Early Childhood Seminar, "Discipline for Life: Getting it Right with Children."

This seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Southeast Missouri State University in Dempster Hall. Madelyn Swift, M.Ed., will present the keynote session followed by break-out sessions in the afternoon.

Swift is a nationally acclaimed author, speaker and authority on discipline, family dynamics and personal communication. She is president of Childright, an educational consulting firm which provides training to parents and educators. She speaks throughout the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Europe on discipline, problem-solving and character development. Swift completed her master of education degree at Bowling Green State University and her certification as a school psychologist from Ohio. Swift is the author of Discipline for Life: Getting it Right with Children, Getting it Right with Teens and Teach Your Children Well: A Parent's Guide to Encouraging Character and Integrity.

"Many parents are tired of arguing, threatening and sometimes bribing their children to get them to listen or to do what they are supposed to be doing. They struggle with doing things that do not feel right - like giving a child a treat for doing something he ought to be doing anyway," states Kristen Foltz-Schlegel, training coordinator for Child Care Resource and Referral. "Madelyn Swift will provide strategies on how to maintain authority and discipline effectively today while keeping an eye toward the future."

Child Care Resource and Referral/Workshop On Wheels is part of the Missouri Child Care Resource and Referral Network. This agency can assist families in finding child care, provide families and child care professionals with services for children with special needs and provide training and technical assistance opportunities for child care professionals. Child Care Resource and Referral serves 20 counties of Southeast Missouri. Success by 6, an early childhood initiative coordinated by the Area United Way, envisions that all children enter school ready to succeed at their optimum potential. Jim Watkins, local Success by 6 coordinator, expressed "the importance of parental involvement and awareness of the impact that quality early care and education has on children, families and the community."

A limited number of parent scholarships are available for parents who would like to attend. For more information or to obtain a registration form, contact Child Care Resources and Referral at (573) 290-5595 or toll free at (800) 811-1127.
