"LEWIS AND CLARK TRAIL" AND "LAND DIVISION IN THE STE. GENEVIEVE DISTRICT, 1790-1820" TO BE PRESENTED JUNE 26 AT SOUTHEAST HISTORIC PRESERVATION FIELD SCHOOL

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., June 14, 2002 - The Historic Preservation Summer Field School, offered since 1997 by Southeast Missouri State University and co-sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will sponsor two presentations titled "Lewis and Clark Trail" and "Land Division in the Ste. Genevieve District, 1790-1820" on Wednesday, June 26, at the Hotel Ste. Genevieve located at the corner of Main and Merchant streets in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

James Denny, a cultural resource preservationist from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will make the presentation on the "Lewis and Clark Trail." It will take place at 4 p.m.

In his presentation, Denny will cover the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the impact of Lewis and Clark's expedition on Southeast Missouri.

Dr. Walter Schroeder, a geography professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, will make the presentation on the "Land Division in the Ste. Genevieve District, 1790-1820." It will take place at 7 p.m.

In his presentation, Schroeder will speak about his new book, Opening the Ozarks: Settlement of the Ste. Genevieve Districts. He will give an overview of the early settlements of Ste. Genevieve during the late 1700s and early 1800s. After the presentation, a book signing will be held.

A dinner is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Bulduc Room of the Hotel Ste. Genevieve. The cost is $10 per person, and reservations can be made by calling (573) 883-7102.

The Historic Preservation Field School presentations are free and open to the public.
