FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RIVER CAMPUS BEECH TREE IS STATE CHAMPION

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., May 17, 2002 - Southeast Missouri State University officials recently were awarded recognition by the Missouri Department of Conservation for the state champion beech tree located on the grounds of the University's River Campus.

The tree, located on the northeast area of the property, is 16 feet in circumference and 100 feet tall and has a crown spread of 103 feet.

The beech tree on the River Campus is the largest tree of its species - fagus grandifolia -- in the State of Missouri as recorded by the Forestry Division of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The Missouri Department of Conservation uses a formula to assess a point value for large trees. Points are determined by a tree's height, crown spread and trunk size. The formula adds the circumference in inches - measured at a point 4.5 feet above the ground - to the height in feet to one-fourth of the average crown spread.

Southeast Missouri is home to 59 of the 136 Missouri state tree champions.
