DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS GUITAR ENSEMBLE CONCERT

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 12, 2002 -- The Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University will present the Southeast Guitar Ensemble in concert at 8 p.m. April 22 in the Baptist Student Center Chapel on the campus.

The concert is open to the public and is free.

The concert features performances by guitar majors from the Southeast Department of Music. The guitarists will offer solo works ranging from the Baroque to contemporary Central America. In addition, smaller ensembles will perform music for flute and guitar as well as guitar quartets and trios.

Guitar solos include a "Prelude" by J.S. Bach, a 19th-century sonata movement, Francisco Tarrega's famous "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and the demanding "Third Sonata" by the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. Movements from Mauro Giuliani's "Grand Duo Concertante" will be performed by a flute and guitar duet. A guitar trio will play two arrangements of works by the Spaniard Isaac Albeniz, including the haunting "Cordoba." The French composer Roland Dyens appears in the program in a quartet from his "Hamsa" suite which is based on Middle Eastern musical influences.

The full Guitar Ensemble will present Maurice Ravel's impressionistic masterpiece, "Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte." The concert will conclude with Leo Brouwer's exciting "Toccata" performed by the full ensemble

The Southeast Guitar Ensemble is directed and conducted by Jeffrey Noonan, who directs the classical guitar program at the University.
