CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., April 12, 2002 -- On Tuesday, April 16, 2002, The Department of Music and the University Museum at Southeast Missouri State University will present a recital by music students at 8 p.m. April 16 in the University Museum galleries.

The concert features performances by flute students of Paul Thompson and guitar students of Jeffrey Noonan. The performers will present both solo and ensemble works ranging from the German Baroque to contemporary American. Flute students will play well-known solos by Arthur Honegger, Edgar Varese and Claude Debussy, including his impressionistic masterpiece, "Syrinx."

Guitar solos will include pieces by J.S. Bach, the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce and the Spaniard, Joaquin Turina. Members of the Southeast Guitar Ensemble will perform Isaac Albeniz's haunting "Cordoba" from his "Iberia Suite." The concert includes a number of flute ensemble pieces, among them a Baroque suite for flute quintet by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier. The recital will conclude with a jazzy flute quartet by St. Louis composer Robert Wykes.

The flutists on this program study flute with Paul Thompson, director of the flute program at Southeast. Thompson has taught at the University for 10 years and is a nationally recognized performer on both the Baroque and modern flute. The guitar students study with Jeffrey Noonan, who directs the classical guitar program at Southeast. Noonan is in his third year at Southeast and performs throughout the region on classical guitar and early plucked instruments like the lute and Baroque guitar.

The Southeast University Museum currently features a juried exhibition of new works by students from the University's Department of Art. On view are traditional two-dimensional work on canvas and paper as well as multi-media and three-dimensional pieces.

The Museum will open for the concert at 7:30 p.m. The Museum is located in Room 122 Memorial Hall on the campus. The concert is free and open to the public.
